MEMBER OF THE MONTH

I've only been shooting street photography for about a year and it's only been six months since I've starting photographing it seriously. I've been toying around with it on visits to Victoria last summer. I live in Squamish so I don't have the convenience of being able to walk the streets of Vancouver any time of day or night so I feel like it's taken me a lot longer to "get into the swing of it" so to speak.

I'm learning that the type of photographs I like taking are up close candid shots of interesting people. I've been getting out of my comfort zone and engaging in conversations on the streets with people before asking to take their picture vs. just random snapping away from a distance.

  1. What one piece of advice would you give street photographers just starting out?

Just get out there and start shooting.  It takes a bit to get comfortable shooting random people on the streets but the more you do it, the easier it gets.

  2. What are your top two places in Vancouver for shooting and why?

First would be downtown Granville up to Robson.  That area has such vibrant lights at night and such great reflections in the rain.  Second area would be any of the skytrain stations.  I love catching people coming and going.

  3. Which three street photographers have influenced your work the most?

I love the work of Alan Schaller, Mark Fearnley, and Vivian Maier.

  4. Describe your work using up to four keywords.

    • Candid

    • Vibrant

    • Authentic

  5. Tell us about (up to 5) books, music or other art forms that influence your photography.

I really love the work of Vivian Maier and I've been watching lots of videos on her collection and how it was all founded.  I hate to say Instagram influences me but I do follow a lot of talented street photographers on Instagram that I get a lot of inspiration from, including the two I mentioned above: Alan Schaller and Mark Fearnley.
