Even the smallest actions of individuals are threads woven into the bigger tapestry of daily life. I am drawn to the many stories that become visible as I wander the streets. A former commercial and advertising photographer, I have been fortunate to have photographs included in exhibitions in China and Italy, and locally at the Burnaby Art Gallery, Richmond Cultural Centre, the Museum of Vancouver and in exhibitions curated by the Whistler Arts Council and the Vancouver Street Photography Collective.

What one piece of advice would you give street photographers just starting out?

There are two different approaches. The first is to look at photography books and exhibits, take workshops with photographers you admire, and participate in a group like VanSPC. The second is to just experiment and explore until you develop your own vision. Either approach requires wandering, looking and practice, practice, practice.  

What are your top two places in Vancouver for shooting and why?

My favourite location is wherever I happen to be. Areas like Commercial Drive have colour and character but when I want to challenge my photographic seeing, I wander among the office towers in the downtown core, or head to one of the outlying suburbs.

Which three street photographers have influenced your work the most?

Bob Alexander, my instructor in a two-year photography program, taught me the difference between acceptable and dramatic. Retired National Geographic photographer Sam Abell fine-tuned my sense of micro-composition and reinforced the compose-and-wait approach that I use. Fred Herzog’s images continue to inspire.
