I am an eclectic amateur photographer with a strong interest in street photography. I seek aesthetic compositions hiding around us in everyday life.

  1. What one piece of advice would you give street photographers just starting out?

One piece of advice I would give to beginners is to know your camera inside and out. This frees up attention to focus on more important things such as observation and composition.

  2. What are your top two places in Vancouver for shooting and why?

Two great spots for photography in Vancouver are Chinatown and Gastown. These physical locations may stay constant but the people, activities, events, weather and lighting are always changing and novel.

  3. Which three street photographers have influenced your work the most?

Three street photographers I admire are Jay Maisel, Fan Ho, and Ernst Haas.

From Jay Maisel one can learn about color and gesture. Fan Ho demonstrates how to use dramatic lighting and very precise framing. Lastly, Ernst Haas photographs of reflections and motion blur are quite inspirational.

  4. Describe your work using up to four keywords.

Four words to describe my photography might be:
    thoughtful, reflective, strategic and broad.

  5. Tell us about (up to 5) books, music or other art forms that influence your photography.

I find painters such as Monet and Rembrandt can inform my photography. I find their use of light and shadow to create depth interesting.
