  1. What one piece of advice would you give street photographers just starting out?

As someone relatively new to street photography myself, I’ll share the advice I found useful: follow what interests you. Let it guide you in discovering your unique style. Explore the work of various photographers to find inspiration, and remember to shoot often and experiment. Each click of the shutter is a step toward honing your craft and developing your own voice.

  2. What are your top two places in Vancouver for shooting and why?

My favourite spots are tourist attractions, and the top two within Vancouver are Granville Island and any area where people gather near the water. Granville Island is a lively hub brimming with unique sights, colors, and characters, making it an excellent spot year-round. I also enjoy shooting near water, as these locations provide breathtaking views and a vibrant atmosphere. When there are lots of tourists around, everyone is absorbed in their own experiences and taking their own photos, so I can capture candid moments without attracting attention.

  3. Which three street photographers have influenced your work the most?

    • Steve McCurry

    • Nichole Sobecki

    • Alan Schaller

  4. Describe your work using up to four keywords.

    • Introspective

    • Atmospheric

    • Dynamic

    • Ephemeral

  5. Tell us about (up to 5) books, music or other art forms that influence your photography.

    • National Geographic Magazine: which showcase stunning visuals and compelling stories from around the world.

    • Impressionist Paintings: their emphasis on light and movement beautifully capture fleeting moments of time and place.

    • Documentaries on Photographers: such as “Finding Vivian Maier” provide insight into the lives and creative processes of remarkable photographers.

    • Timeless Black and White Films: like “Ladri di biciclette” (Bicycle Thieves) evoke deep emotions and portray the essence of humanity, reminding me of the power of storytelling through imagery.

    • Photography Books: such as “Bystander,” recommended to me at a VanSPC Photo Book Club meeting, which offers a detailed and inspiring exploration of street photography and its impact.
