MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Andrew Fok
I started street photography back in London, UK, but then took a 10-year break from it.
In early 2025, I stopped training for long-distance running and ended up with too much unused energy. As a result, I picked up my camera again and went on long walks.
Harry Gruyaert’s work inspired me to switch from black-and-white to color photography, while Elliott Erwitt inspired me to find humor (and dogs) on the streets.
My favorite photos are usually taken when I switch my brain off and let my subconscious — or heart — take over.
What one piece of advice would you give street photographers just starting out?
Be patient and don’t give up! Street photography is like fishing; the fish (moment) can come at any moment, and you have to be ready to catch it.
What are your top two places in Vancouver for shooting and why?
Anywhere near downtown. Gastown/Chinatown area is pretty good for subjects and colours.
Which three street photographers have influenced your work the most?
Elliot Erwitt
Harry Gruaert
Rebecca Norris Webb
